event #2: Smooch A Pooch

The second event that I took place in this year was a fundraiser that the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority put on called, “Smooch A Pooch”. This event brought in registered therapy animals and was a fundraiser while being a de-stress event at the same time. There were two dogs and also a large amount of people. This event demonstrated care mainly on the basis of self care. Self care is defined as our daily activities in looking after ourselves. It is important in a field like Youth Development that we are taking care of ourselves physically, emotionally, and mentally. People who work in the field of youth development can tend to burn out quickly, that doesn’t mean that everyone does but there is a chance that a large amount of people will.
This aligns with our anchor because on the syllabus, care is defined as experience, practice, and critically engage the intentional and diverse practices of care that shape youth development work. The engagement of people during this event was very important. Most of the college aged youth who attended the event were not on their phones, but they were actually interacting with one another promoting healthy social development. This showed care because they were asking thoughtful questions that pertained to the event. For example, some people asked each other about school lives, personal lives, and other aspects of their lives and I could tell that this made an impact on a lot of people.
