Ideology Quiz

When I took the Ideology Quiz, a large amount of the things that were done in the quiz was very affirming of my Ideology. I got a score of 8 on Positive Youth Development Ideology, 13 on Critical/ Social Justice Ideology, and 15 on Risk and Resiliency Youth Development. As I was looking at the results that I was given, what I wanted to do was reaffirmed in my future. I have always wanted to be a positive light for youth. By being a positive light I mean someone that youth can confide in and be a role model for them throughout my future, whether it be in a school setting or in a youth development setting.
My values lie with a strength based approach through Youth Work. Looking at individuals through a strength based perspective is a very important thing for me because even if a person can come from not the best circumstances, they can still have positive things in their lives that can impact them in their future. The strength based approach was first introduced to me by my former manager, he worked it down into looking at seeing what a child can do instead of what a child cannot do. I look at it as my job is to help any child/youth no matter what their background succeed in their future endeavors.

Student Centered Learning Conference Reflection

During the Student Centered Learning Conference, I was very impressed with the variety of workshops that they offered. I attended the workshop that primarily focused on the MET school in providence and their internship program. I was interested in this workshop because I knew that the MET had a very youth led type of ideology and I wanted to see if first hand through their Internship Program. This workshop was very interesting because it was student led with the principal of the school only jumping in when he needed to. I found this to fit with our Leading With anchor because those individual students are working with their faculty at their school and the mentors in their internships to create an experience that is individual for them and that is something that they can use and learn from in the future. Have you witnessed an Injustice?

    This week's topic that we are discussing is Injustice. An injustice can go from being racist to someone to just calling someone out on their attire in a classroom. These all have to with how the idea of oppression is evolving and ever changing. When we think we have conquered an injustice, it has just changed its head so its more complicated than it was before. For example, when we look at an injustice like racial oppression, there can be deeper meanings to it. Racial oppression goes back to slavery because white people of the time put down people who are different than them. This idea of putting down people who look different still reigns true today in many different ways.      I have personally only seen one injustice and it was when I was in high school. Event #1: Matthew Shepard Talk

For one of my events this semester, I went to the talk with Matthew Shepard's mom that was presented earlier in the semester. This talk was put on by Pride Alliance and the Unity Center here on campus. Through this event, I was introduced to Matthew Shepard, a young man who lost his life in 1998 because of his sexual orientation. Judy Shepard is the mother of Matthew Shepard, who was one of the founding members of the Matthew Shepard foundation. During this event, it reminded me of our work on Identity and how it can affect a young person. Matthew was killed because someone didn’t agree with the way that he identified. His mother came and spoke to a group of students in Roberts Hall about the hate in the world and how we were the ones who needed to change it.
