event #2: Smooch A Pooch

Image
The second event that I took place in this year was a fundraiser that the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority put on called, “Smooch A Pooch”. This event brought in registered therapy animals and was a fundraiser while being a de-stress event at the same time. There were two dogs and also a large amount of people. This event demonstrated care mainly on the basis of self care. Self care is defined as our daily activities in looking after ourselves. It is important in a field like Youth Development that we are taking care of ourselves physically, emotionally, and mentally. People who work in the field of youth development can tend to burn out quickly, that doesn’t mean that everyone does but there is a chance that a large amount of people will. This aligns with our anchor because on the syllabus, care is defined as experience, practice, and critically engage the intentional and diverse practices of care that shape youth development work. The engagement of people during this event was very impor...

Event #1: Matthew Shepard Talk

Image
For one of my events this semester, I went to the talk with Matthew Shepard's mom that was presented earlier in the semester. This talk was put on by Pride Alliance and the Unity Center here on campus. Through this event, I was introduced to Matthew Shepard, a young man who lost his life in 1998 because of his sexual orientation. Judy Shepard is the mother of Matthew Shepard, who was one of the founding members of the Matthew Shepard foundation. During this event, it reminded me of our work on Identity and how it can affect a young person. Matthew was killed because someone didn’t agree with the way that he identified. His mother came and spoke to a group of students in Roberts Hall about the hate in the world and how we were the ones who needed to change it. She left us with a quote that I found very powerful it says, “It’s up to you, You are not only the present but the future of this country, whether you do it through politics or activism, religion or education, the corpor...

Ideology Quiz

Image
When I took the Ideology Quiz, a large amount of the things that were done in the quiz was very affirming of my Ideology. I got a score of 8 on Positive Youth Development Ideology, 13 on Critical/ Social Justice Ideology, and 15 on Risk and Resiliency Youth Development. As I was looking at the results that I was given, what I wanted to do was reaffirmed in my future. I have always wanted to be a positive light for youth. By being a positive light I mean someone that youth can confide in and be a role model for them throughout my future, whether it be in a school setting or in a youth development setting. My values lie with a strength based approach through Youth Work. Looking at individuals through a strength based perspective is a very important thing for me because even if a person can come from not the best circumstances, they can still have positive things in their lives that can impact them in their future. The strength based approach was first introduced to me by my former manag...

Student Centered Learning Conference Reflection

Image
During the Student Centered Learning Conference, I was very impressed with the variety of workshops that they offered. I attended the workshop that primarily focused on the MET school in providence and their internship program. I was interested in this workshop because I knew that the MET had a very youth led type of ideology and I wanted to see if first hand through their Internship Program. This workshop was very interesting because it was student led with the principal of the school only jumping in when he needed to. I found this to fit with our Leading With anchor because those individual students are working with their faculty at their school and the mentors in their internships to create an experience that is individual for them and that is something that they can use and learn from in the future. Another thing that I found interesting at the Conference was the Student Researchers. I found their part of the presentation to be very interesting and I like how the students were...

What is Youth Work? KML Chart

Image
KNOW Youth can be viewed as a problem  Youth have a hard time being listened to  its hard for youth to have a voice LEARN Youth need caring relationships, high and clear expectations, and opportunities for participation and contribution There has been an increase in after school programs because of "at-risk" youth Young people fare best when they experience these three key elements continuously and in all the settings where they spend time with their families, in school, and among their larger communities MORE In the future, I will bring up how I personally believe that Youth do need caring relationships, high and clear expectations, and opportunities for participation and contribution. The interesting thing is that all of these things don't need to be from a parent or guardian. As a future youth worker, one of my jobs is to foster these types of relationships with my students and give them these things especially if they are not getting these thing...

Have you witnessed an Injustice?

Image
This week's topic that we are discussing is Injustice. An injustice can go from being racist to someone to just calling someone out on their attire in a classroom. These all have to with how the idea of oppression is evolving and ever changing. When we think we have conquered an injustice, it has just changed its head so its more complicated than it was before. For example, when we look at an injustice like racial oppression, there can be deeper meanings to it. Racial oppression goes back to slavery because white people of the time put down people who are different than them. This idea of putting down people who look different still reigns true today in many different ways.      I have personally only seen one injustice and it was when I was in high school. One of my best friends at the time was gay, and every year we took part in the day of silence in support of people who had died because of their sexual orientation. My senior year, there was a gro...

What is Care?

Care in youth work is one of the most important things to happen within our world today. Care in youth work is defined as so many different things but it all stems from the people who are delivering the care. In Dr. Restler's Article, she works with teachers who have different philosophies and ways that they deliver care to their students. The first teacher that Dr. Restler focuses on is Sarah, who is a queer teacher who is out and completely open with her students. Her care is based on a love of humanity, rather than some kind of maternal instincts. One of the important things that I took away from Sarah's section of the except was when Lynch's work was mentioned. It specifically stated, "The mental work of 'holding the persons (care recipients) and their interests in mind, keeping them present in mental planning and anticipating and prioritizing their needs and interests" This section resonated with me in a lot of ways because this is how I was raised and t...
